Two teams that should still be exploring an upgrade at the running back position are the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders.
The Commanders haven't done anything inspiring at running back this offseason. The team sports a running backs room that includes the unproven Jacory Croskey-Merritt and free-agent signings Rachaad White and Jerome Ford, both of whom have served as mostly backups during their respective careers.
Seattle let Kenneth Walker leave in free agency and Zach Charbonnet isn't certain to be ready for the start of the season because of a torn ACL suffered in the playoffs.
The Seahawks added Emanuel Wilson, but he's been a backup for his entire career, and George Holani is another candidate for touches but remains unproven.
One running back both teams should be keeping an eye on is New Orleans Saints rusher Alvin Kamara, who was recently pegged as a cut candidate by Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox.
Here's why:
"It certainly feels like the sun is setting on Alvin Kamara's long tenure with the New Orleans Saints. The 30-year-old averaged a career-low 3.6 yards per carry in 2025 before suffering an MCL sprain that ultimately ended his season," Knox wrote
"Early in free agency, New Orleans got a new starting running back by signing Travis Etienne Jr. to a four-year, $47.4 million contract," Knox concluded.
The Saints didn't spend that kind of money on Etienne to have him splitting work in the backfield, so there isn't much a role left for Kamara in New Orleans.
As a result, it's not crazy to think the Saints could explore a post-June 1 trade or cut with Kamara, with the former being the better route to save money.
Kamara isn't the back he once was, but he'd still be effective in a shared backfield with his dual-threat ability as a runner and pass-catcher.
And he would offer an upgrade over the backs the Commanders and Seahawks have now and would likely garner a bigger role with either team than he would should he remain with the Saints.
At the very least, it would be worth it for the Commanders and Seahawks to explore a trade for the veteran back considering their shaky situations.
