Colts' QB Anthony Richardson gives up his favorite candy to try to win competition vs. Daniel Jones

Anthony Richardson is entering a pivotal season in his NFL career.

The former top-five pick has had a frustrating first two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. He's shown running ability and a tantalizing deep ball, but they've been coupled with injury issues and frustrating inaccuracy and inconsistency.

Now into year three, this may be Richardson's last chance to prove, at least in Indy, that he's a starting NFL quarterback.

The Colts brought in Daniel Jones this offseason as competition for the starting QB role, and it sounds in the early going like the two passers are right alongside each other in the battle.

Richardson has made one amusing change that he hopes helps his cause: He gave up Skittles.

He told ESPN's Stephen Holder that this offseason was time to change his diet to give himself the best chance at being successful.

"I had to cut the sweets out, man," Richardson said this week. "It's the candy. I used to be big on Skittles and all that stuff, just eating candy all the time. So, I've been just trying to cut out the sugary stuff and hydrate more. I need to be more of a pro when it comes to my eating."

Richardson isn't the first top-level athlete to eventually make the shift away from a candy-heavy diet as his career has gone on.

In addition to helping fuel his body in the right way, it also shows a positive mindset.

Having the willingness to give up something you're used to in hopes of being the best version of yourself is a big step.

Richardson has the raw talent and tools, for sure. And now it sounds like he's putting in the work to maximize those. The Colts may still make a starting QB out of him yet.
