Colts provide latest update on Anthony Richardson’s shoulder injury

Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. appears to be ready for training camp.

ESPN’s Stephen Holder reported Thursday that Richardson has fully recovered from the right shoulder setback he suffered in June and is back to throwing activities

Holder notes that, with players not available over the summer, the Colts medical staff is yet to reach their own decision on his status.

“Importantly, the Colts have not had a chance to personally evaluate Richardson because players have been on their summer breaks,” Holder writes. “That will happen when Richardson returns to Indianapolis for training camp next week.”

Richardson initially hurt his throwing shoulder in Week 5 of the 2023 season, requiring season-ending AC joint surgery. Just under two years later, the 23-year-old’s offseason training was cut short after experiencing soreness in that shoulder.

After consulting multiple medical opinions, it was determined that Richardson simply needed to rest his shoulder in order to be ready for training camp in late July.

With the prescribed time off proving effective, Richardson appears fully healed ahead of an open competition with Daniel Jones, who the Colts signed on a one-year, $14 million contract this offseason.

It’s the most important time of Richardson’s career, as losing the starting job to Jones likely spells the end of his time in Indianapolis— a time marred by injuries and inconsistency.

Richardson has appeared in just 15 out of a possible 34 games in his first two seasons, completing just over half of his pass attempts (50.6%) for 2,391 yards, 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. While more effective with his legs, Richardson just has not come along as a passer as quickly as the Colts would’ve liked.

The former fourth-overall pick still has a long way to go before he lives up to his price tag. But, there is some optimism in knowing he’ll be on the field to try and defend his starting position when the Colts report to training camp July 22.
