The Indianapolis Colts fired long-time general manager Chris Ballard after the team's Week 6 loss to the Tennessee Titans. That decision has opened up a very interesting GM job in the NFL.
This Colts team is in a bit of trouble, and managing the team out of this hole will prove tricky. But who will be the one to take over for Ballard? Well, one name emerged recently that caused plenty of buzz: former Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.
However, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Colts are not expected to get Manning as their general manager, as the Hall of Famer and now ESPN talent is not expected to become the new Colts GM.
Peyton Manning not expected to take Colts GM job
"Peyton Manning has many jobs -- Omaha Productions, the ManningCast, commercial pitchman -- but he is not expected to add Indianapolis Colts general manager to his list of titles and responsibilities, league sources told ESPN," Schefter reports.
While there was some obvious appeal to bringing in Manning as the new general manager, this report from Schefter should end that speculation and hope for Colts fans.
Schefter also reported that Indianapolis hadn't even reached out to Manning about the job, and that Manning wouldn't be interested if given the opportunity.
While the Colts might ask for his advice on a new GM hire, or help in some capacity with how to run the team, this doesn't look like it's going to become a John Elway situation.
MORE: Why Colts are likely sellers after firing Chris Ballard before NFL trade deadline
The Colts, in their search for a general manager to get them out of the mess that Ballard helped create, will have someone not named Peyton Manning in the GM chair leading the way.
This shouldn't be a huge surprise, as the rumors linking Manning to the Colts GM job were only just rumors.
Carlie Irsay-Gordon has some work to do, as the Colts search for a new GM comes with the team potentially set to be major sellers at this year's trade deadline.
A new GM likely won't be hired until after the deadline, and potentially not until the season is over. But whoever is set to take over, they'll have their work cut out for them with this roster in need of a major overhaul.
