Colts defender taking day-by-day approach after season-ending injury

Samson Ebukam is not used to missing extended time. Entering 2024, the Colts' defensive end had only missed two games due to injury.

That changed quickly, as Ebukam suffered a torn Achilles in last year’s training camp, an injury which ultimately kept him out for the entire year.

He’s back on the field now, with more gratitude for the opportunity.

“It’s a blessing,” he said. “I don’t take any of the days for granted.”

The 30-year-old said he’s taking things day-by-day.

“One day at a time is how I’m taking it and we’re gonna be ready for the season.”

Ebukam also shared that he thought he could’ve potentially returned to the field sooner, but it’s taken some time to build himself back up. Now, he feels much more comfortable and feels like himself again.

“The more I use it, the more I trust it,” he said about his Achilles. “I’m just doing my best to be in the best shape possible so that whenever the time comes, I can help the team win.”

Indianapolis will be counting on Ebukam to return with a bang. In his first season of a three-year, $24 million contract, he recorded a career-high 9.5 sacks, leading the team. He also had team-highs in tackles for loss (10), quarterback hits (17) and forced fumbles (3).

While his success came under a different defensive coordinator, Ebukam remains a player the Colts need to step up on Lou Anarumo’s defense, especially as a mentor.

The Colts drafted JT Tuimoloau in the second round this past April, a player who Ebukam sees has a curiosity to learn.

“He’s a sponge,” Ebukam said. “He’s willing to learn. Whatever you tell him, he’s like, ‘alright bet, I’m gonna do that next time.’”
