Colorado Buffaloes football legend Shedeur Sanders’ off-field gaffes may’ve permanently propelled Dillon Gabriel ahead of him in Browns QB room

Colorado Buffaloes football legend Shedeur Sanders has to “knock the socks off” the Cleveland Browns’ brain trust to come anywhere close to starting under center during the 2025 season.

That may not even be good enough if Dillon Gabriel is also improving at a steady rate after Sanders’ recent speeding scandals.

Sanders has received two recent citations. He hadn’t even paid off the first speeding ticket before getting his second.

Former New York Jets and Miami Dolphins executive Mike Tannenbaum explained why Gabriel may have a permanent advantage over Sanders in Berea for the foreseeable future.

“When we bring him in, as the head coach or the quarterback, you are the most important employee of a $6 billion enterprise and how you handle things on and off the field matter," Tannenbaum said on Friday's episode of "Get Up" on ESPN, per CBS Sports. "Mark Schlereth used to say, ‘Preseason games -- they don't count but they matter and how you comport yourself off the field matters.’ To have this happen twice would be a concern.

“It's not the end of the road, but let me bring you into what typically happens at this time of the year. You set your roster and your initial sort of reps for training camp. If you're sitting there in Cleveland and they're saying that Dillon Gabriel is a third-round pick, he's done well. Shedeur Sanders has done well on the field, but he's had these two issues off the field, albeit minor, they'll give more reps to Dillon Gabriel. Remember, every general manager has one formula on their board: production equals tolerance. He's a fifth-round pick. He has not produced yet.”

Sanders accepting a career backup role is unlikely. If things aren’t working out in Cleveland, one figures Coach Prime will make some noise about it.

The Browns may not listen to it if Shedeur doesn’t clean up his act off the field, though.
