Colorado Buffaloes football great Shedeur Sanders and fellow Cleveland Browns rookie Dillon Gabriel did not unseat 40-year-old veteran Joe Flacco and fourth-year franchise face in Pittsburgh-turned-Super Bowl backup-in-Philly-turned-Berea newcomer Kenny Pickett during Kevin Stefanski’s quarterback battle this offseason.
ESPN’s Daniel Oyefusi provided a positive update for the latter two experienced signal-callers, which served as negative news for the former pro newcomers.
“It was more of the teaching and an installation process,” Oyefusi said. “That's going to change once we get into the summer. [They're] looking to evaluate this crop of quarterbacks.
“... You have to look at the vets, Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, as being ahead of the crop. ... He impressed with his progression, with his accuracy. They love what he's doing in the building, but can he crack that group?”
Browns receiver Diontae Johnson claimed the same thing back in June.
“I think I'm going to roll with Kenny for right now. I'm really seeing Kenny going on like right now with the ones, but then Joe will come in. I think they're probably going to roll with him. Just like to see, like just coming off the season, he was with Philly and having a Super Bowl,” Johnson had said on “The Comeback.”
“So I'd rather see, I think they're going to stick with him through preseason and then, you know, they can live with what Joe comes and brings to the table.”
It was probably obvious from the jump that Flacco had an inside lane to starting given his postseason appearance with Cleveland two years ago. Pickett has clearly come along from his time with the Eagles.
Or just far along enough to surpass two hyped up rookies from a deep, but at the top of the draft, shallow, QB class.
