Colorado Buffaloes football coach Deion Sanders was more hurt about his son Shedeur’s backslide to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL draft than he was about the grueling recovery process from bladder cancer, a disease that nearly took his life in May.
Coach Prime shared his heartbreak during a discussion with retired NFL cornerback Asante Samuel on his “Say What Needs To Be Said” podcast.
“That’s one thing I’m not healed from yet. I’m healed from cancer, but I’m not healed from that yet … Like it’s heavy. Yeah, I’m really heavy right now,” Sanders said.
Coach Prime didn’t understand how Shedeur was demonized for not being able to play the position, even though he got four receivers – Travis Hunter, Jimmy Horn Jr., Will Sheppard, and LaJohntay Wester – onto NFL rosters for training camp.
“So, if the question is, can I win without my son? My son had to be really darn good, huh? Four receivers are in training camps right now from last year’s team,” Sanders said.
“So, four (receivers). But this one (Shedeur Sanders) couldn’t play the position.
“Like, come on, man. Is it character or what was it? Like, wasn’t me.
“I talked to both owners as well as both head coaches. So, and the GM. So, if we had a clear understanding. So it wasn’t me.”
Reports have revealed that Shedeur’s character may have had something to do with the “Grown QB” being passed on during the first two days of the draft.
Regardless, Deion continues to prove that he loves his kids more than life itself. He also just revealed that he does have some semblance of a relationship with Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, GM Andrew Berry, and head coach Kevin Stefanski, despite rumors to the contrary.
Amidst his heartbreak, Sanders is both informative and inspirational.
