Colorado Buffaloes football coach Deion Sanders shared the final conversation he had with Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders before his NFL preseason debut against the Carolina Panthers on Friday night.
From the sound of it, Coach Prime and his son had a bittersweet conversation that was mostly light but had deep moments.
Some of those deep moments included a shared criticism of Shedeur’s critics, who’ve been loud in the wake of his slide to the NFL draft’s fifth round in April.
“We’ve already spoken like three times today—we just got off the phone joking and clowning like crazy. It’s gonna be strange for both of us. I was in the hospital the last time I missed I think three games, and this time I’m well,” Deion said.
“Me going out there taking that walk, and him taking that walk, that’s different for him. But he’s so prepared right now. A lot of people are approaching it like a preseason gam. He’s approaching it like a game. And that’s how he’s always approached everything — to prepare and to approach it like this is it. He’s thankful and appreciative of the opportunity.
“He don’t get caught up in all the rhetoric in the media. He’s far beyond that. He was coached through that when he was a kid, so we’ve always gone through that, and he’s always navigated his way. Some of the stuff is just ignorance. It’s just really adolescent. But he far surpasses that and I can’t wait to see him play.”
Clearly, Deion is ready to go to war with media members in the wake of Shedeur’s first start on Friday night. No matter what happens, there will be overreactions to the action.
Cleveland will understand first-hand what having the “Prime Time” spotlight means after the Browns’ date with the Panthers in Charlotte.
