Colorado Buffaloes football coach Deion Sanders is convinced his son, Shedeur, will start under center for the Cleveland Browns at some point during the 2025 NFL season. At this stage, with the “Grown QB” playing on the scout team in Berea, Ohio, Coach Prime’s coming off like a homer.
Sanders is still behind fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel on Kevin Stefanski’s quarterback pecking order. He’s done nothing to overcome the Browns’ third-round pick, whom owner Jimmy Haslem sees big things in.
Yahoo Sports’ Chris Cwik did a good job putting into perspective how inappropriate it is for Coach Prime to be putting that expectation on his youngest son just three weeks into the season.
“If playing time was Shedeur's main goal, the Browns do seem like the better choice. Longtime NFL veteran Joe Flacco is unlikely to start for the team the entire season, leaving only fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel as Sanders' main competition for the starting gig once the Browns move on from Flacco,” Cwik wrote.
“Still, if Shedeur is going to start this season, he'll need to prove he's a better option than Gabriel. That hasn't been the case thus far, as Sanders is listed at the No. 3 quarterback on the team's depth chart.
“A lot can change over the course of a season, and Deion clearly believes things will work out, but Shedeur has a lot of work to do if he's going to live up to his dad's expectations and start an NFL game in 2025.
“Being active on game day — something Sanders hasn't done yet — would be a good start.”
Coach Prime got way ahead of himself, telling the millions watching Travis and Jason Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast that his son would be a QB1 during his rookie season, especially after a slide to the fifth round of the 2025 draft.
