Joseph Savarino arrest details
Savarino was arrested in Durham on Saturday night and charged with driving while impaired.
Officials say Savarino was involved in a fatal accident on Cole Mill Road just before 9 p.m. ET on April 18. While driving his Ford Explorer down the street, Savarino struck and killed a 15-year-old boy who was riding an e-bike with his friends. The boy, identified by his mother as Jack Shea, died at the scene, per WPTF.
“It is with unfathomable sadness that [my husband] and I share that our perfect, smart, athletic, fearless and handsome baby boy, Jack, passed away yesterday, April 18th, at just 15 years old,” Allison O’Shea wrote on Facebook. “We are finding comfort in what was his last perfect day. He woke up and asked to go to confession at Immaculate Conception Church. He then played two baseball games with his high school team, where he did what he always did — showed up fully and excelled at first base.
“Later, he went on his usual afternoon bike ride with friends. As he was coming back into our neighborhood, he was involved in an accident and was hit by a car. Jesus took him immediately. We will never understand why his time here was so short or why he was needed so soon, but we have to hold onto our faith that he is now our angel. We are better people because of him, and we will carry him with us always.”
According to official court documents obtained by TMZ, Savarino admitted to drinking earlier in the night. At 12:45 a.m. Sunday morning, Savarino was administered a breathalyzer test. He blew a .11, .03 more than the legal limit.
Savarino was booked in at the Durham County Detention Center, with his bail set at $100,000 on April 20. He'll go to court in May. Savarino surrendered his license for at least 30 days as a result of the accident.
Who is Coach Kryzewski's grandson?
Krzyzewski has 10 grandchildren in total. Two of them belong to his daughter, Debbie and son-in-law, former Duke player Peter Savarino: Michael and Joseph.
Michael, the eldest brother, walked on at Duke before being placed on scholarship. He was arrested on DWI charges after being stopped for a stop sign violation in Nov. 2021. Michael was in the car with then-Blue Devils freshman Paolo Banchero, who was summarily charged with aiding and abetting DWI. Michael pleaded guilty to the charges in July 2022, while Banchero saw his charges dismissed.
Joseph, meanwhile, is 26 years old, per On3.
