Coach Carlitos! Laver Cup highlights has tennis fans loving every minute of Alcaraz coaching role

LONDON — One of the most unique things about the Laver Cup is the access fans across the world get to seeing their heroes up close and personal, in a completely new light.

We can all watch their press conferences, see how they interact with the crowd and their coaches during matches, and even stalk their Instagram pages to get a glimpse into their life off the court.

What the Laver Cup offers up that's so unique is how our favorite players react with their peers, how they adapt to playing a team sport; something that isn't their usual order of play. It's a chance to showcase their personality; and nobody does it better than Carlos Alcaraz.

If you'd have searched 'Laver Cup' on X (Twitter) these past 24 hours there's one man in particular stealing the show.

But it's not just the world No. 3 winning points for Team Europe that's got fans talking. "Coach Carlitos" is certainly a becoming a trending talking point.

In Friday's match between Casper Ruud and Francisco Cerundolo an animated Alcaraz, donning a white cap to complete the full coach look in his blue jacket tracksuit, could be seen giving plenty of words of encouragement at any opportunity to the Dane.

Suggesting a few more drop shots (not everyone can do what you do, Carlos) was particularly interesting in one clip that went viral as the seven-time grand slam champion pointed out Cerundolo's weaknesses. Ruud went on to beat Cerundolo and earn Team Europe's first points. 

In Saturday's opening session with Flavio Cobolli and Learner Tien, the Italian found himself four games down early on. Alcaraz, alongside team captain Yannick Noah, were straight in his ear offering guidance at the first opportunity. Cobolli soon earned his first point on the board and then broke serve shortly after, despite going on to lose the opening set 3-6 and the match via tiebreaker.

"Well, I enjoy that a lot, to be honest. Sometimes I probably, you know, talk too much, and I don't know if I'm gonna helping the player," Alcaraz said when asked about his coaching role.

"But I'm try my best, you know, every time they approach the bench. You know, I just trying to say the things that I was seeing, you know, outside, outside the court that normally you can see the things more clearly.

"Yeah, I love that. I love, you know, giving my opinion of how I see the things, you know, on the court and hopefully helping the player who was playing out there. "

Bench Cam is a brilliant and unique idea for tennis and in truth the Laver Cup could have a 'Carlos Cam' he's that enjoyable to watch without a racket in his hand.

So far he's already been among the celebrations at match points with his team-mates and it's clear he lives and breathes every point; even if his team-mate is on the losing side. A stunning overhead smash from Team World's Learner Tien on Saturday saw Alcaraz slump in his chair with the slow motion replay receiving plenty of laughter from the O2 crowd.

Long live giant personalities in tennis and the growing opportunities for its fans to sample them.
