The quarterback situation for the Cleveland Browns isn’t the only one that has question marks. Making a big move to address their long-term future under center would be wise, but only if the Browns can make the right deal.
Predicting where quarterbacks could land, Austen Bundy of FanSided projected that Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy would land in Cleveland, a deal that wouldn’t be too surprising at this point.
Deshaun Watson has yet to deliver anything, and with uncertainty surrounding his future, Cleveland is still searching for a reliable long-term answer. While younger options like Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel could be in the mix, neither has been good enough to do much.
The issue, however, is that McCarthy is in the same boat as Sanders and Gabriel. Still early in his career, McCarthy has some tools, but this would be far from a sure thing.
“McCarthy still has a lot of upside and Cleveland needs a long-term solution at passer. Deshaun Watson will eventually go and neither Shedeur Sanders nor Dillon Gabriel have stepped up to take the reins.
“Facilitating a deal in which the latter is shipped to Minneapolis to be Murray's backup and McCarthy battles Sanders for the starting job could fix multiple problems at once,” he wrote.
The Browns would be taking a risk here that likely wouldn’t make too much sense. Unless they were able to land McCarthy for a late-round pick, it’s better to go with another option.
