Chris Finch reveals he regrets playing Anthony Edwards out of position as a point guard

Now that the Minnesota Timberwolves have LaMelo Ball as their point guard, Anthony Edwards can focus on his own game. Everyone knows that Edwards is a talented player who can be a primary ball-handler, but he fits more of a score-first approach.

With Ball as the point guard, the Timberwolves finally have a playmaker who can set his teammates up well. Mike Conley Jr. was a stellar guard for Minnesota, but he was a bit too old to be a constant figurehead for the Timberwolves.

During his time with the Charlotte Hornets, Ball proved that he is one of the best point guards in the league. He is a natural playmaker who knows how to make the right pass while also knowing the right timing. Despite the Hornets' struggles over the years, Ball did stand out with his performances.

Now that he is with the Timberwolves, he is being paired with another star guard. Edwards is one of the purest shooting guards in the league, so now, he can focus on that role moving forward. Of course, his reps as a point guard will help him be more decisive, so that might not be wasted.

Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch was forced to use Edwards as a point guard for the majority of the 2025-26 season. It was good for the Timberwolves because Edwards developed stronger dynamics with his teammates, but that does not beat out a natural point guard like Ball.

"In the Playoffs, it was just double-team after double-team. We got to get him back to his natural position off the ball. We didn’t create enough catch-and-shoot threes for him, and when you look at the numbers with LaMelo on the floor with his teammates and the efficiency and the production," Finch said on The Road Trippin' Show.

"I mean Kon Knueppel shot 7% higher from the three-point line with LaMelo on the floor than he did without. I mean that’s a massive stat for a great shooter, and that’s a big bump for a great shooter."

Moving forward, Finch will have a much more straightforward system with Ball and Edwards as the backcourt. It will be challenging for other teams to play against the Timberwolves because they have a more dynamic offense now with the pair of star guards.
