(Bloomberg) — China’s President Xi Jinping pledged support for neighboring Myanmar during a visit to Beijing by his counterpart Min Aung Hlaing.

The two countries should advance the construction of key Belt and Road Initiative projects, including the flagship China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, Xi said, according to a readout of Chinese state media.

“China firmly supports Myanmar in safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and supports the new Myanmar government in coordinating development and security,” the report said Xi told the Myanmar leader.

Key projects should go ahead while ensuring security, as they will contribute to Myanmar’s economic development, Xi said, according to the report. He also pledged to increase Beijing’s support for reconstruction after an earthquake last year.

The Beijing visit is Min Aung Hlaing’s second overseas trip since being sworn in as president in April following a widely criticized election.

Earlier this month, he met with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, where the two agreed to speed up infrastructure projects including the India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway.

Myanmar has been struggling with a crippled economy, US sanctions and ongoing civil war since the military seized power in 2021. Civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been jailed on multiple charges, and Min Aung Hlaing is seeking international recognition as the new president.

The World Bank on Tuesday cut its growth forecast for Myanmar to 2%, from 3% previously, due to the energy supply shock of the Iran war.

China and Myanmar on Tuesday also signed 18 memorandums for cooperation, including on a global security initiative and the Greater Mekong cross-border transportation agreement, according to officials at the meeting, without providing details.

During the five-day visit, the former general will also hold talks with Premier Li Qiang and visit high-technology industries, according to Myanmar’s Ministry of Information.
