China Renews Call for Iran War End as Pakistan Envoy Visits

(Bloomberg) — China pushed for a swift end to the US-Israel war in Iran and vowed to expand communications with Pakistan, which has emerged as a key intermediary in the conflict, now in its fifth week.

The pledge coincides with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar making a visit to China on Tuesday at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, according to a statement from Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry.

“China and Pakistan are all-weather strategic partners of mutual trust and mutual support,” Mao Ning, a spokeswoman for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a press briefing on Tuesday.

“It’s believed that the two foreign ministers will step up strategic communications and cooperation on Iran and other regional and international issues of mutual interest, and jointly call for peace and justice,” Mao added.

The comments represent China’s latest attempt to put pressure on the US and Iran to end a war that has disrupted global markets and sent oil prices surging.

Pakistan has emerged as a key player in seeking to broker peace, leveraging ties with both US President Donald Trump and longstanding bonds with Iran.

However, Trump has given conflicting signals about the US’s next steps for the war. He has said the US was already negotiating — directly and through mediators — with Iran, while also publicly musing about expanding the military campaign and threatening strikes on key energy and infrastructure sites. Iran has repeatedly denied that it is in talks with the US.

Earlier: Pakistan Says Ready to Facilitate US-Iran Talks Within Days

Despite the mixed messages, Pakistan hosted the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt on Sunday to discuss the Middle East conflict and said Islamabad was ready to facilitate peace talks in the coming days. Neither the US nor Iran had representatives at that meeting.

In a televised briefing on Sunday, Dar said “Pakistan is very happy that both Iran and the US have expressed their confidence in Pakistan to facilitate their talks.”

“Pakistan will be honored to host and facilitate meaningful talks between the two sides in coming days for a comprehensive settlement of the ongoing conflict,” he added.

Mao in an X post earlier Tuesday said that “China commends and supports Pakistan’s mediation effort for deescalation and stands ready to enhance communication and coordination with Pakistan and others to jointly work for a ceasefire and peace in the region.”

Pakistan has a mutual defense pact with Saudi Arabia, which has been targeted by Iran strikes. Islamabad is also motivated to find a resolution to the fighting to avoid being dragged into the conflict.
