(Bloomberg) — China’s navy will conduct a joint drill with Indonesia to the east of Taiwan, the latest assertion of sovereignty by Beijing in the waters that have become increasingly fraught with tensions.

Type 054A frigate Honghe will hold a navigation exercise with a frigate from Indonesia’s navy in mid-August, China’s Defense Ministry announced in a statement Tuesday without specifying the start and end dates, the coordinates or the route. Indonesia’s Defense Ministry didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The drill will focus on communication and replenishment at sea, aiming to promote joint operational capability and safeguard regional stability, the Chinese statement added.

The two navies have exercised together previously but this is the first time that China publicly announced a training for both forces in waters east of Taiwan. It also marks the first time that Beijing is working with a foreign country in those waters.

The move could heighten tensions. Beijing has stepped up its presence in the area in response to an announcement by Tokyo and Manila that they would hold talks to resolve their maritime disputes in that region. The discussions concern waters east of Taiwan, the self-ruled democracy that Beijing claims as its territory.

Since then, China has dispatched its coast guard as well as a number of government vessels from various ministries to press its claims in the waters. Beijing even questioned foreign commercial boats for the first time in an apparent effort to demonstrate its sovereignty.

Beijing’s latest operation builds on years of intensifying Chinese activity around Taiwan. Since then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei in 2022, China has staged large-scale military drills encircling the island and normalized warship and warplane deployments across the Taiwan Strait’s median line.

Taiwan has practiced breaking up blockades, including planned exercises this year to escort ships carrying oil and natural gas, and officials have warned that sealing off the waters around the island would choke energy supplies for the entire region.

The Honghe entered service in 2022 with the Eastern Theater Command. The Type-054A is the most numerous frigate of the Chinese navy.
