(Bloomberg) — China wants renewable energy consumption to jump 53% over the next five years and to convert intermittent wind and solar into more dependable sources of electricity.

Renewable power use should rise to about 1.8 billion tons of coal equivalent by 2030, up from 1.18 billion tons in 2025, according to a five-year plan for renewables published on the National Development and Reform Commission’s website. China has already set 2030 targets for renewables capacity and for non-fossil fuel share of total energy consumption.

The plan also lays out several targets for making renewables more dependable. Wind and solar, backed up with energy storage, will be counted on to provide 20% of electricity during summer and winter evening peak periods, up from about 10% currently. The country wants 300 gigawatts of peak generation capability from renewables by 2030, a figure that matches a previously announced target for battery storage capacity.

- Boosting renewable generation to 6 trillion kilowatt-hours from 4 trillion in 2025
- Of that, wind and solar generation should rise to 4 trillion kilowatt-hours from 2.3 trillion in 2025. The wind and solar figure would reach a previously announced target of 30% of total generation
- Non-electric utilization of renewables should rise to 150 million tons of coal equivalent from 60 million in 2025
- For emerging technologies, China wants to increase solar thermal capacity to 15 gigawatts from 1.82 gigawatts at the end of 2025, and marine energy to 400 megawatts from near nothing now
