Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is stepping onto the field once again, and it may be his last season in the NFL. Kelce hasn't indicated if he's going to retire after this year, but he's 36 years old and turns 37 in October, so he's at that age where retirement in the NFL is common.
The Chiefs' season opener is against the Denver Broncos on Monday. Before the "Monday Night Football" showdown, Kelce sat down with ESPN's Chris Berman, and the talk turned to retirement. During the chat, he indicated that he still loves what he does on the field.
Travis Kelce still has the desire to compete
"I still have the desire to go out there and compete, and I still think I can compete at a high level," Kelce told Berman during the interview.
He also added, "I love this game so much that I'm not ready to go into that next phase yet."
Well, that sounds pretty definitive that he likes what he's doing with the Chiefs and may not be ready to throw in the towel quite yet. A lot will depend on this season, of course. If the Chiefs pull off a winning season and go all the way, Kelce may want to go out on a high note. If not, he may want to have one more year at it.
Kelce's numbers are still solid, even though they aren't quite as high as they used to be on average. Last season with the Chiefs, he clocked 76 receptions for 851 yards and five touchdowns.
No matter what Kelce decides, Chiefs Kingdom will likely be sad when he finally says farewell to the NFL. But, he'll be in their lives forever, especially since he and wife Taylor Swift are perpetually in the spotlight.
