Chiefs-Titans trade proposal sees K.C. take flier on embattled $14M wide receiver

As the Kansas City Chiefs look to retool for another run at the Super Bowl in 2025 after losing to the Philadelphia Eagles, the team could use more help at the wide receiver position.

Kansas City did manage to retain Marquise Brown and still has Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice under contract, but Brown has had issues staying healthy and Rice and Worthy are both unproven.  Rice is also coming off a significant knee injury that ended his 2024 season early and may not be himself in the first year back, and DeAndre Hopkins departed for the Baltimore Ravens in free agency.

The Chiefs could use another proven wide receiver to add to the group, but also more depth. With that in mind, Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox suggested the Chiefs make a trade for Tennessee Titans wide receiver Treylon Burks, who may check the depth box.

  • Chiefs get: WR Treylon Burks
  • Titans get: 2025 fifth-round pick

"In Kansas City, Burks (6'2", 225 lbs) could bring size to the receiver lineup to help replace DeAndre Hopkins, who signed with the Baltimore Ravens in free agency," Knox wrote of why the Chiefs should make a play for Burks.

Burks' career has been a total disaster. Originally drafted with the No. 18 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft, Burks was supposed to replace A.J. Brown after the disastrous trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, but he hasn't even come close.

The Arkansas product showed some promise in Year 1 with 33 receptions for 444 yards and one touchdown, but it has been all downhill from there. Injuries have slowed him greatly, but he hasn't been very effective when on the field, either.

It's conceivable a change of scenery will do wonders for Burks, and especially a change of scenery that has him working with the best quarterback and offensive mind he's ever had in Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid, respectively. If Reid and the Chiefs can't figure out a way to unlock Burks, nobody can.

With Burks entering the final year of his $14 million rookie contract, and with his value being in the toilet, he should not cost the fifth-round pick Knox projects. Instead, we'd expect it to cost a seventh-rounder to get the trade done.

For that price, taking a chance on Burks, who is still only 25, would be a worthwhile venture for the receiver-needy Chiefs.
