The Kansas City Chiefs slumped to a 31-28 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday Night Football as Andy Reid's team did its best to self-destruct.
A whopping 13 penalties hurt the Chiefs consistently, as did Patrick Mahomes' interception, but Kansas City did rally, as it has repeatedly over the years.
Mahomes led a 15-play, 86-yard touchdown drive as the Chiefs took a 28-24 lead in the fourth quarter, but left a little over 1:30 on the clock for Trevor Lawrence...and he took advantage of it, marching 52 yards in 13 plays for the game-winning touchdown.
It left Mahomes 23 seconds with no timeouts to get into field goal range, but he couldn't, and he was left with one overriding feeling from the loss.
“Obviously sucks,” Mahomes said. “You let a game slip away, credit to them, they played hard. They played hard the entire game, and they got a lot of good football players. They closed out there at the end, and so it still sucks whenever you get a lead like that and you're not able to hold it through the rest of the game.”

Chiefs defense can't hold up when it matters
One thing we know about Steve Spagnuolo's defense is that in crunch time, they come through, and we've seen it time and again: when a stop has to be made, the defense delivers.
It just wasn't this time.
Lawrence's game-winning drive was the second-longest Kansas City gave up all night as the defense simply couldn't get a stop, something we have become accustomed to them doing.
With the Detroit Lions and their high-powered offense up next, the Chiefs' defense will face another stern test, one that they must pass.
It has been an inconsistent start to the season for Kansas City, but things must even out before it's too late.
