Chiefs have reason to be excited about Patrick Mahomes' return from injury

Patrick Mahomes is making his way back.

And if Kansas City Chiefs fans are allowed to get excited about a five-second video clip in May, they can get excited.

The Chiefs shared a video of Mahomes dropping back in play-action motion on Tuesday and tossing a pass.

Mahomes has a brace on his left knee after his season-ending injury in December, and there's clearly no real way to see how he's doing.

But it's the kind of thing that can get a fanbase dreaming that Mahomes can indeed be ready in three-and-a-half months to open the regular season.

The Chiefs did well this offseason to bolster the quarterback depth chart on the chance that Mahomes isn't ready.

They acquired Justin Fields from the New York Jets, and the extremely mobile QB would likely start for as long as Mahomes might have to miss.

A Week 1 return for Mahomes would be just less than nine months from the time of his torn ACL, which is generally the short end of recoveries from that injury. You'd also imagine the Chiefs don't want to push him and risk anything negative happening.

By the same token, this is their superstar QB, and when he's ready, the Chiefs will play him. They have a 6-11 season to bounce back from.

Mahomes clearly is a driven individual, and you've got to think he's pushed hard to rehab this injury the right way.

He might just be on his way back in time to not miss any portion of the 2026 regular season.
