Chelsea have been handed a blow as Jamie Gittens appeared to have suffered an injury on national duty. The winger was in action for England U21 in their UEFA Euro U21 Qualifier against the Republic of Ireland U21 on Friday, November 14.

Gittens started against Ireland U21 on Friday but was taken off at around the hour mark and replaced by Josh King. The Chelsea star evaded a tackle from James McManus just before his substitution. As per Mirror, he then walked straight into the tunnel after the change.

It's unclear whether Gittens suffered a big injury or it was just a precautionary change. It would perhaps be clearer when England U21 face Slovakia U21 on Tuesday, November 18. Head coach Lee Carsley hasn't provided an update about Gittens' potential injury.

Chelsea signed Gittens from Borussia Dortmund in the summer for a reported fee of €63 million. He has scored one goal and provided three assists in 14 games across competitions for them.

After the international break, the Blues are set to face Burnley away in the Premier League on November 22. However, they will then host Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League and Arsenal in the Premier League in their next two games. Hence, they will hope to have Gittens fit and available for these important matches.

Pundit claims Chelsea made a mistake by signing Jamie Gittens

Pundit Alan Smith recently raised questions about the Blues' signing of Jamie Gittens in the summer. He added that the signing looked "worse" after the west London side signed Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United for £40 million. Both Gittens and Garnacho are competing for the spot on the left wing at Stamford Bridge.

Smith said:

"Who knows how Chelsea feel when it comes to these comings and goings. Jamie Gittens hasn’t been an upgrade though, he’s just been disappearing up blind alleys, and we’ve not seen the best form from him yet. That was a strange move. It felt unusual at the time, and it looks even more out of place now. But that’s Chelsea at the moment, isn’t it?"

Gittens has started just six games across competitions this season, with just two of them coming in the Premier League.

Garnacho, meanwhile, has scored two goals and provided two assists in 10 games across competitions for Enzo Maresca's side. He has started in seven games, with five coming in the Premier League.
