The Los Angeles Chargers are entering training camp with a shift in their backfield dynamics, as rookie Omarion Hampton steps into the lead running back role while free-agent signing Najee Harris recovers from an injury.
With Harris placed on the Non-Football Injury List due to an eye injury suffered in a July 4 fireworks mishap, Hampton, the Chargers' 2025 first-round pick, is getting valuable first-team reps and making a strong case as RB1 in the early stages of camp.
On Sunday, Chargers editorial director Eric Smith noted in his column that Omarion Hampton is currently operating as the team's RB1.
"Omarion Hampton figures to play a key role in the Chargers offense this season," Smith wrote. "But the Bolts' 2025 first-round pick has been thrust into the top running back spot with Najee Harris on the Non-Football Injury List with an eye injury."
While Harris' return timeline remains uncertain, the team is getting a closer look at what it has in Hampton, a 6-foot, 220-pound back with a powerful frame and high-end upside.
Harbaugh said the real evaluation will start once physicality enters training camp:
"He’s been attacking it, hitting it hard," Harbaugh said. "Still got some days before we're in pads but I think he's going to be even better in pads. Looked good without them. He's well trained and ready to roll."
Najee Harris, one of the team's key offseason signings, has yet to participate in practices but is present and engaged in meetings.
