Chargers add running back amid Omarion Hampton injury, Kimani Vidal's struggles

The Los Angeles Chargers' running back room is in a dire state, as the team's top two backs, Omarion Hampton and Najee Harris, are on Injured Reserve. Hampton is dealing with an ankle injury, while Harris is out for the year with a torn Achilles.

Kimani Viddal has handled RB1 duties with Hampton and Harris out. Though Viddal posted 138 scrimmage yards and a touchdown during his first game as the starter versus the Miami Dolphins in Week 6, the 24-year-old struggled in the Chargers' loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Week 7, tallying just 20 rushing yards on nine carries.

With Viddal disappointing in his last outing and Los Angeles lacking depth in their running back room, general manager Joe Hortiz decided to add another player to the position group on Tuesday.

The Chargers announced multiple roster moves on Tuesday, including signing running back Trayveon Williams to the practice squad.

"The Los Angeles Chargers today signed long snapper Rick Lovato to the active roster. In a corresponding move, the team placed defensive lineman Otito Ogbonnia on Reserve/Injured. The Bolts also signed running back Trayveon Williams to the practice squad," the Chargers announced on their website.

Williams has played 68 games since entering the league as a sixth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. During his five-year tenure in Cincinnati, Williams tallied 307 rushing yards and 74 receiving yards. The 28-year-old also served as a kick returner.

Though Williams is nowhere near a starting running back, he could be a solid No.3 behind Viddal and Hassan Haskins until Hampton returns to the lineup.

Los Angeles is set to host the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday. We'll see if Williams gets the call-up from the practice squad for some primetime action.
