Celtics trade to draft Cooper Flagg rumors pick up steam with NBA insider’s announcement

The Boston Celtics are already one of the best teams in basketball.

What if they can add Duke freshman phenom Cooper Flagg?

The rumors have persisted since the moment Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles to set up a missed 2025-26 season. And one new development has added some credence to the rumors.

The Ringer's NBA insider Kevin O'Connor reported that Flagg interviewed with the Celtics at the NBA Draft Combine.

"I have multiple sources telling me the Celtics also interviewed Cooper Flagg," O'Connor said on his podcast. "Now, this does not mean they’re going to trade up into the top 10, but I do think it’s interesting.”

O'Connor and Tom Haberstroh discussed whether Jaylen Brown could be put in a deal for Flagg. It would likely take first-rounders in addition to the expensive Brown to get any deal done.

The Celtics, if they pulled it off, would get the youngest and best player in this NBA Draft class. Flagg led Duke in points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks.

He's from Maine, adding a New England flavor to the whole thing.

It'd certainly be an earth-shattering NBA trade, and the second one made by the Dallas Mavericks (holding the No. 1 pick currently) in the span of four months.

The NBA is made for drama like this, so who knows? Maybe it could really happen.
