It's possible that the Boston Celtics could have a bit of a test run over the next few months on some players they either bring in or have already brought in.
For players like Anfernee Simons, that could be the case.
However, there's also a fair argument to be made that trading somebody like Simons makes plenty of sense for the Celtics, and reports have indicated that the team is interested in doing so.
Perhaps the Celtics could land someone in return who would potentially be a player to test out as they look to find a new contract.
That could be none other than PJ Washington of the Dallas Mavericks, whom Sports Illustrated recently proposed a trade for the Celtics to land him.
Hawks Receive: Caleb Martin, Jordan Walsh, and a 2031 2nd round pick (via BOS)
Mavericks Receive: Anfernee Simons and Georges Niang
Celtics Receive: P.J. Washington, Dwight Powell, and Vit Krejci
“They have reportedly been shopping Simons ever since they traded for him, and they could get some front court upgrades with this trade. Washington and Powell both become starters for the Celtics, and Payton Pritchard could get his chance to start at point guard. While this team is not a title contender, they are a more well-rounded team, and all three of these players make them a deep team for next season when Jayson Tatum returns,” they wrote.

When the Celtics are healthy, having someone like Washington on the roster would be better than having Simons.
While Simons is a better scorer, Washington has proven to be a decent three-point shooter and an above-average defender throughout his career.
