The Boston Celtics’ offseason has arguably been one for the ages thus far.
For starters, the 17-time NBA champions shocked the world by trading NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul George, two first-round picks, and two second-round picks.
Additionally, Boston officially outbid the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks for a 27-year-old for an historic rebounding stud and NBA champion.
“The Boston Celtics announced today that they have signed center Mitchell Robinson,” Boston stated in Tuesday morning's news release.
“Robinson, one of the league’s premier defenders and rebounders, joins Boston after spending his first eight NBA seasons (2018-26) with New York. In 397 games (215 starts), the 7-footer holds career averages of 7.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks in 23.4 minutes per game.”
“Robinson stands as New York’s all-time leader in field goal percentage (70.2%) and the NBA’s all-time playoff leader in offensive rebounds per 100 possessions (9.5). A key member of the Knicks’ 2025-26 championship team, Robinson averaged 5.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks in 60 games (16 starts) last season.”
Robinson was a monster on the offensive and defensive boards with the Knicks this past season. While it was unclear what the former second-round pick would bring to the table, scoring-wise, upon checking into games, there was no question about how he would perform as a rebounder in New York’s second unit.
Robinson's play in the Knicks’ NBA Finals clinching Game 5 victory over the San Antonio Spurs was a perfect representation of his bench contributions, as he snagged 10 big-time rebounds in the 94-90 win. With the Celtics signing Neemias Queta to a four-year, $56 million deal to remain with the franchise, it’s safe to say Boston’s frontcourt is in good shape moving forward.
As for the Lakers and Knicks, they both pivoted to other center targets after falling short in the Robinson sweepstakes (the Lakers added Walker Kessler and Kevon Looney, while the Knicks struck a deal with Andre Drummond).
