The Boston Celtics have made waves for the players they’ve let go of this offseason, but they’ve made a decision to keep one of their players around.
On Sunday, HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto reported that the Celtics have exercised the $2.27 million team option on JD Davison. The option for next season is still a non-guaranteed deal, but with all of Boston’s offseason moves, it likely gives Davison a good shot at making next season’s roster.
Davison will be entering his fourth year in the league, all with the Celtics. While he hasn’t made much of an impact at the NBA level, Davison has shown his star potential playing for the Maine Celtics in the G League.
Last season, Davison won G League MVP, averaging 25.6 points and 7.8 assists. Considering that Boston lost Jrue Holiday and Anfernee Simons is reportedly on the trade market, there could be an opportunity for Davison to take over the backup point guard role for Payton Pritchard, who might be moved into the starting five.
Across three NBA seasons, Davison has only played in 36 games for Boston, averaging 1.9 points in 5.5 minutes per game across his career. Davison was originally selected by the Celtics with the No. 53 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, and the team clearly still believes that he can be a helpful piece of the puzzle.

Although he hasn’t been able to contribute up to this point, Boston might have a role for its 6-foot-1 guard when next season comes around.
