Celtics' Luke Kornet linked to $13.8 million contract update

Luke Kornet could be in line for a significant raise this offseason — but will it be the Celtics who give it to him?

The 7-foot-1 center delivered another productive campaign as a key reserve for Boston this past season, averaging 6.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.0 blocks across a career-high 18.6 minutes per game in 73 regular-season appearances. He also shot an impressive 66.8 percent from the field during that span.

The big man is slated to enter unrestricted free agency this summer and could command a fairly lucrative contract.

John Hollinger of The Athletic recently compiled a list of the NBA’s top available big men this offseason, complete with projected salaries. Kornet’s expected deal is listed at $13.8 million per year. However, with the Celtics likely to shed salary this offseason, it’s unclear whether he’ll return to Boston.

The team is entering what could be a transition year, with Jayson Tatum anticipated to miss significant time due to a torn right Achilles. Boston is also expected to explore trade offers for several key contributors on less-than-ideal contracts, including Kristaps Porzingis in the frontcourt.  Additionally, Al Horford is set to become an unrestricted free agent, with Hollinger projecting him to earn a hefty one-year, $18.9 million deal.

If the Celtics move Porzingis or lose Horford in free agency, a reunion with Kornet could be on the table — and with it, the chance at a larger role. Still, the big man’s shot-blocking ability and efficiency make him a likely target for several teams around the league. Given Boston’s financial constraints, it wouldn’t be surprising if he walks.
