Celtics linked to $97 million Nets big man Nic Claxton amid roster reshuffle

The Boston Celtics continue to retool their roster following Jayson Tatum's torn Achilles in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Facing looming financial constraints and a potential gap year, the team sent Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers for Anfernee Simons — though Simons may still be rerouted on his expiring contract. Boston also dealt Kristaps Porzingis for Georges Niang, who was later sent to the Utah Jazz. Additionally, the Celtics lost Luke Kornet and are widely expected to lose Al Horford in free agency.

With Chris Boucher, Neemias Queta and Luka Garza as their primary options at center, Boston is likely to pursue further frontcourt upgrades.

Brandon Austin of Pro Football & Sports Network labeled Brooklyn Nets center Nic Claxton as a trade candidate, suggesting he could be on the move in Brooklyn's rebuilding effort.

“The Brooklyn Nets are clearly in rebuilding mode, evidenced by a disappointing 26-26 finish last season,” he wrote. “Despite being a key defensive anchor, Nic Claxton could eventually find himself outside the team's long-term rebuild strategy, which prioritizes draft capital.”

Given Boston's urgent need for frontcourt help, Claxton could be a strong fit. The Celtics already have offensive weapons and don't require a high-scoring center. The 26-year-old is also under contract through the 2027-28 season, and he'd provide stability if the team is forced to navigate the 2025-26 campaign without Tatum.

Claxton averaged 10.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.4 blocks across 26.9 minutes per game in 70 regular-season appearances in the 2024-25 campaign. His defensive presence and athleticism would be an intriguing addition for Boston amid its roster reshuffle.
