Celtic are in advanced talks with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain over a potential free-agent move, with growing confidence inside the club that an agreement can be reached, The Sporting News understands.

The Hoops are understood to be pushing to finalise terms quickly, and there is optimism that the 32-year-old could undergo a medical as early as today if discussions progress positively in the coming hours.

While no deal has yet been signed off, talks are said to be constructive, with both sides keen to explore the opportunity.

Hoops boss Martin O'Neill confirmed in his press conference on Tuesday that he had personally held discussions with the player.

O’Neill acknowledged Oxlade-Chamberlain’s experience at the highest level and hinted that Celtic were exploring options to strengthen their midfield ahead of the new campaign.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has been without a club since leaving Beşiktaş last summer, where injuries limited his opportunities during a short spell in Turkey.

Since then, the former England international has been working to regain full match sharpness and has spent recent months training at Arsenal, the club where he enjoyed some of the most consistent football of his career.

Capped 35 times by England, Oxlade-Chamberlain offers versatility across midfield and wide areas, as well as experience of competing at the top end of the Premier League and in European competition.

A final decision is expected soon as Celtic weigh up their options and seek to conclude the move without delay.
