Cavaliers trade pitch would soften the blow of missing out on LeBron James

1 hour ago 3

The Cleveland Cavaliers wanted LeBron James back. Who wouldn't? It really seemed like a fairytale ending to have James back in Cleveland to round out his NBA career. It seemed meant to be, but it wasn't.

So, where do the Cavs go from here? They missed out on James but still have hope for a solid 2026-27 season.

With James Harden still unsigned, the Cavaliers have some flexibility to do something before the season starts. They've already traded Dennis Schröder to the Charlotte Hornets for Tre Mann, and they're reportedly interested in Peyton Watson, too.

Now, Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report has put together a proposal involving the Cavaliers, Denver Nuggets and Memphis Grizzlies that would get Watson to the Cavs while also giving Denver and Memphis some financial flexibility.

Inside the 3-Team Proposal

Under this proposal, Cleveland would get Watson. Denver would get GG Jackson, a 2030 protected first-round pick from the Cavs and trade exceptions tied to Watson and Zeke Nnaji. Memphis would snag Max Strus, Nnaji, three second-round picks and cash.

It would be a get for Cleveland to land the 6-foot-8 Watson. He's the big wing they've been looking for after losing De'Andre Hunter. Last season, he averaged 14.6 points per game. He also shot a career-best 41.1% from 3-point range. Getting him would put Watson alongside Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen and Harden, assuming Harden re-signs.

Denver would have a decision to make with this trade. Watson wants around $25 million per year, according to Bleacher Report, and the Nuggets already project to have the NBA's highest payroll. This deal would allow the Nuggets to move on from Watson, add Jackson and pick up a first-rounder while also getting out from under Nnaji's contract.

Memphis would get Strus, an experienced 30-year-old wing, as well as three second-round picks. The Grizzlies could keep him around Cameron Boozer and their young core or flip his contract.

It's a fascinating trade idea. But, this one seems to be a longshot for really happening.
