Cavaliers predicted to trade $62M elite shooter for Nuggets' NBA champion Peyton Watson

The Cleveland Cavaliers are still searching for their final starter heading into the upcoming season, while James Harden remains unsigned as the team continues to monitor potential big moves. Cleveland is one of the few teams still looking to add a starting-caliber forward.

Like many teams in the Eastern Conference, the Cavaliers are viewed as legitimate contenders this season. Now, they have emerged as a team with interest in NBA champion Peyton Watson.

“Meanwhile, the Cavaliers have recently called to express interest in a sign-and-trade for Denver Nuggets restricted free-agent forward Peyton Watson, league sources told HoopsHype," HoopsHype's Michael Scotto wrote.

Watson is an intriguing target because of his upside and the potential he brings on both ends of the floor. He also fits the type of player Cleveland could use because he would be willing to embrace whatever role is needed to help the team win. The 23-year-old is reportedly seeking a contract in the $28 million range.

“Peyton Watson and his camp want something in that $28 million north range and the offers so far have been fluctuating between that $20-24 million per year range… When you’re Peyton Watson, you want more than Christian Braun,” ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel wrote.

The Cavaliers would likely need to complete a sign-and-trade to acquire Watson. The good news for Cleveland is that the Nuggets have limited financial flexibility, meaning they may not have much leverage in negotiations. NBA reporter Evan Sidery believes Cleveland could send Max Strus and draft compensation to Denver in exchange for Watson.

“A potential sign-and-trade trade framework between the Cavaliers and Nuggets involving Peyton Watson: Cleveland: Watson. Denver: Max Strus + 2030 swap,” Sidery posted.

The Cavaliers could benefit from Watson being available at a more manageable price due to Denver's financial limitations. Cleveland would also be able to move on from Strus' contract while adding a young, versatile forward who fits their long-term plans.

Strus is currently on a $62 million contract. For the Nuggets, acquiring him would give them a veteran shooter while also allowing the contract to come off the books after next season. Cleveland and Watson joining forces could make the Cavaliers even more versatile and dangerous on the court.
