Confession: I have no idea how Darren Aronofsky‘s 2025 film Caught Stealing ends because for me, it climaxed about ten minutes into its 107 minute runtime. Literally.
**Spoilers for Caught Stealing, now streaming on Netflix**
Caught Stealing is a dark comedy and thriller set in 1998 New York. Austin Butler plays a handsome and charming bartender named Hank who is dating the obscenely gorgeous Yvonne (Zoë Kravitz). We meet Yvonne when she flashes him as he’s closing up the dive bar he manages for the night. Within minutes, the two disgustingly attractive people are basically on top of each other, nearly having sex in the lobby of Hank’s apartment.
The only thing that can break these two lovers out of their horndog spell? Seeing Hank’s punk neighbor Russ (Matt Smith) leaving instructions to care for his cat, Bud, while he travels back home to London to attend to his dying father. This is, as I understand it, the beginning of the “plot” of Caught Stealing. Russ is leaving more than just his cat with Hank. He’s leaving his dark connections to the NYC underworld with his everyman neighbor. However, before Caught Stealing dives into its grimly comic saga, Aronofsky stages one of the most electrically hot sex scenes ever between the films two stars.
Once Russ is gone and lil Bud is accounted for, the young lovers giddily race to take off their clothes as the bed divides them. The score begins to thrum like the heavy beat of a heart, the rising beat of blood coursing through every part of your body. Yvonne hops onto the bed and begins to slowly crawl to Hank. He cups her chin.

Because actress Zoë Kravitz is so petite and actor Austin Butler is so tall, Aronofsy cleverly uses the bed to bring the couple visually to the same level. The effect is rawly beautiful. Two people with godlike bodies embracing each other, eyes locked on eyes, loins to loins.
And then… Hank spins Yvonne around and sets her on his lap as if she weighs as much as a sigh.

The last bits of clothing come off. The kisses become voracious. The two take total refuge from reality in each other’s arms. The camera closes in on them, in tandem with their passion becoming more and more intense.

Then Aronofsky flips the perspective. Instead of watching Hank and Yvonne as an invisible voyeur, we take little Bud’s position. The cat blinks at the humans getting busy. A literal interloper standing in our place.
Soon, we can see the sex intensifying from Bud’s POV, giving the whole sequence a comic, and yet still erotic, flair.

As soon as the sex scene crescendoes, we cut to Hank waking up the next day from a nightmare and the dark madness of Caught Stealing gets back on track.
Now, I know I ought to keep watching this film. It’s got so many of my favorite actors, from Regina King to Carole Kane. Heck, Bad Bunny is in this movie! Still, part of me is honestly just thoroughly entertained by this one hot and heavy sequence.
Caught Stealing is currently streaming on Netflix — and it’s got a darn good sex scene in the first ten minutes!
