The New York Mets fired manager Carlos Mendoza on Friday, reports Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Mendoza was in his third season with the NL East club, but New York is 34-47 and 9.5 games back of a Wild Card spot in the National League.
Needless to say, this was not a shocking move from the Mets. Owner Steve Cohen expects to win World Series titles, and Mendoza's tenure with the team was not trending in that direction by any means.
Mendoza's exit means the Mets will be on the hunt for a new leader. For now, former San Diego Padres skipper Andy Green will serve as interim manager.
Who are the Mets' best options?
Kai Correa
Before joining the Mets as their bench coach, Correa, 37, was with the Cleveland Guardians as their major league field coordinator and director of defense, base running, and game strategy.
He served as the interim manager for the San Francisco Giants in 2023, going 1-2 in three games. Before that, Correa's primary role with the Giants was bench coach. It can be argued that the Mets need someone with extended managerial experience.
“He’s very thorough and comes prepared every day,” Bo Bichette told The Athletic's Tim Britton in March about Correa's attention to detail. “He speaks with a lot of confidence.”

Alex Cora
The Boston Red Sox fired Cora in April after a 10-17 start. He led the team to a World Series title in 2018 and owns a 620-541 record in parts of eight seasons as a skipper.
Cora received interest from other clubs after he departed from the Red Sox, but he decided to take the remainder of the year away from baseball to spend time with his family.
He's widely regarded as one of the best in-game decision makers and an extremely solid leader in a clubhouse. Red Sox players were reportedly not happy with Cora's dismissal.

Rocco Baldelli
The Minnesota Twins won three division titles (2019, 2020, 2023) under Baldelli's tenure from 2019-25, which included a Manager of the Year Award in 2019.
Under Baldelli, the Twins won 101 games in his first season in the dugout, and his overall managerial record is 527-505. Minnesota fired him after the conclusion of the 2025 regular season.
Currently, he is a special assistant to the Los Angeles Dodgers' president of baseball operations, Andrew Friedman.
