Carli Lloyd not backing down from Christian Pulisic criticism despite World Cup injury reveal

Carli Lloyd is standing ground on her comments on U.S. men’s national team star Christian Pulisic.

Lloyd, the USWNT legend, has been highly critical of Pulisic after his World Cup stumbles and said she has nothing to apologize for.

“I don’t owe anyone an apology,” Lloyd said on X after it was revealed he suffered a bone bruise and microfracture in his leg during the Americans’ World Cup-ending loss.

“My comment wasn’t about his post game interview. He skipped Gold Cup last summer because he wanted to rest and be ready for WC. He ended up resting the whole year. That’s the facts. Nothing personal against him.”

“You rest when your playing career is over. Period,” she added, referencing Pulisic saying that he had “time to rest” after the United States was eliminated from the World Cup by Belgium in the Round of 16.

Pulisic sat out the Gold Cup in 2025 and also skipped multiple friendlies in the lead-up to this year’s World Cup.

Pulisic has been critical of an oversaturated schedule with “breaks” from club soccer normally meaning games with the USMNT.

It was not the first time that Lloyd was critical of Pulisic, as she voiced her opinion directly after the United States’ 4-1 loss on Monday.

“I gotta be honest, I was a bit disappointed with Christian Pulisic,” Lloyd said on Fox after the loss. “I think whether he wants to be the star of this team or not, we didn’t see enough from him in this particular game and really the whole World Cup.

“Little glimpses here and there.”

Pulisic was forced off the pitch with another injury in the 59th minute. While trying to get a shot off, he kicked Belgium midfielder Youri Tielemans’ leg. On Thursday, it was revealed he suffered a bone bruise and a microfracture in the tibia and fibula.

It was his second injury of the tournament, also leaving the opening match against Paraguay early with a calf issue, which forced him out of the next game against Australia.
