It will not be long before the St. Louis Cardinals are eliminated from postseason contention. With just a few series left, they are chasing a 4.5-game lead for the last spot in the NL Wild Card race.
Fans are eager to get to the offseason and see the club make some changes. One of the biggest changes comes in the front office, with Chaim Bloom taking over as the club's next president of baseball operations.
He is coming into his position with a ton of decisions to make. He must get this club moving in the right direction and get the fanbase excited about this team again.
Chaim Bloom will have the opportunity to improve this team through free agency. There are some intriguing options here, and there will be plenty of others who decide to opt out of their contract after the season concludes.
St. Louis could use an upgrade on the mound. Luckily for them, there is a familiar face who could be headed to the open market, and Sports Illustrated's Zach Pressnell argues he would be an excellent fit for the Cardinals.
"The Cardinals are set to lose Miles Mikollas in free agency, and they're also reportedly looking to trade Sonny Gray. It might not be smart to spend money on a new veteran pitcher, but reuniting with Jack Flaherty wouldn't be too expensive, and he would add the necessary veteran presence to the Cardinals' rotation. He came up with St. Louis almost a decade ago, so reuniting now wouldn't be a bad idea."
Flaherty, who was drafted by the Cardinals in the first round during the 2014 MLB Draft, has an opt-out option with the Detroit Tigers following this season. With his familiarity and veteran presence, he could be somebody who would be a great addition in St. Louis if he decides to test the open market.
