Cardinals urged to listen to offers for $81 million closer despite win streak

The St. Louis Cardinals lost their first two games in May and fell to 14-19 on the year. However, they have since gone on a nine-game winning streak and have come to within a game of first place in the National League Central.

The Cardinals were not expected to be a contender this year, as 2025 was deemed more of a transitional year by the organization. However, they are outperforming expectations.

Their strategy at the trade deadline is unclear at the moment, though there are still months before it arrives.

Despite their surge, MLB Network's Tom Verducci believes the Cardinals shouldn't fully commit to being buyers just yet.

"I like what the Cardinals are doing," Verducci said. "Let's let this thing play out, but I would still when I get to July think about guys like [Erick] Fedde, [Ryan] Helsley, see what I can get on the market. It reminds me of Detroit last year."

The Cardinals could be playing their way into buyer's territory. They did so last year after overcoming a 15-24 start to the season.

But Verducci certainly makes a good point. Pitchers like Fedde and Helsley can bring back solid returns as rentals, and the Cardinals need to have an eye on the future.

This could help them restock their farm system with talent and prepare for 2026 and beyond.

Ultimately, it will depend on if this run is sustainable. If they remain in the race, then they could certainly look to add a piece or two. But it would be wise for them to listen to offers on Helsley and Fedde, as well as other assets on expiring contracts.

It will certainly be interesting to see what they decide to do.
