Cardinals trade deadline idea sends $15 million hurler to Yankees

The St. Louis Cardinals are off to a dreadful 10-15 start in 2025. They were not expected to contend this year, but still are off to a concerning start.

So far, their proposed "reset" hasn't taken shape yet, as nobody was traded last offseason. But that could change at the trade deadline if they can't bounce back into contention.

The Cardinals have a few pieces they could sell off before July 31. One such piece is right-hander Erick Fedde.

Brendan Smith of FanSided proposed the idea of the New York Yankees calling the Cardinals about Fedde's availability.

"Erick Fedde, who was a hot commodity last summer, is on an expiring contract for a team, St. Louis, that will likely go nowhere," Smith wrote.

"In an ideal world, Fedde would replace one of Stroman, Carrasco or Warren at the end of the rotation after moving to St. Louis at last year's trade deadline."

Fedde is on an expiring contract, and if the Cardinals can't get back into contention, it would make sense for St. Louis to sell him to a contender and capitalize on his value.

The veteran right-hander is 1-2 with a 3.33 ERA in five starts this season. St. Louis acquired him last year in a three-way trade with the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers, the same controversial deal which cost them last year's NLCS MVP Tommy Edman.

Fedde can at least be counted on as a reliable innings eater and keep a team in a ballgame, which is what he has mostly been able to do with St. Louis.

The Yankees are without Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil and could use another arm, which makes them an ideal landing spot for Fedde.

It will be interesting to see where things stand at the deadline, but if the Cardinals can't rebound from their rocky start, look for them to be sellers rather than buyers.
