Cardinals set record-setting low attendance at Busch Stadium in 2025

The 2025 season for the St. Louis Cardinals was a forgettable one. From the struggles of veteran pitchers like Miles Mikolas and Erick Fedde to the injuries plaguing the team for a large portion of the year, it wasn't a great season for St. Louis.

St. Louis sold off a trio of relievers, including fan favorite closer Ryan Helsley, at the trade deadline. John Mozeliak is stepping down after 2025, and Chaim Bloom is taking over. It's a sign that the times are changing in St. Louis.

All of these factors, combined with the lackluster performance and offseason moves from St. Louis, created an atmosphere at Busch Stadium that didn't instill confidence.

As Ethan Erickson of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports, the attendance at the stadium this season set a record low not seen in 30 years, and there was a significant dropoff from just two years ago.

Cardinals' attendance takes massive plunge, drops nearly one million from 2023's total

"The Cardinals finished 2025 with an average attendance of 27,778 tickets sold per game, continuing a two-season decline." Erickson writes.

This number is the lowest the Cardinals have seen (other than the pandemic average) since 1995, the year after strikes canceled the 1994 postseason and shortened the 1995 season.

To put it another way, the Cardinals' attendance this season was so bad that it mirrors that of the attendance from one of the most volatile and disastrous periods in modern baseball history.

But that's not the only number factoring into the Cardinals' low attendance numbers this season. Their end-of-season totals were 991,084 fewer tickets than the 2023 season for St. Louis. It's also 628,108 fewer tickets than the Cardinals had in 2024.

Those are terrible numbers for the Cardinals to set, but what makes this massive drop-off sting a lot more is the fact that, for a while, St. Louis was one of the better fan bases when it came to attending games for their team.

MORECardinals' outfielder's job may be in jeopardy if poor play continues

As Erickson points out, "After decades spent as a perennial top-10 attendance franchise, the Cardinals' numbers have dropped precipitously in 2025. ... St. Louis will finish in the bottom half of teams in attendance for the first time since 1980."

The 2025 season for the Cardinals has been a disaster in the stands, and the on-field play, while just mediocre, lacks any meaning. There isn't a prominent prospect of a superstar playing every day, and with major changes coming in the offseason, it's hard to get invested in this team.

Of course, their numbers aren't the worst in the league, as St. Louis is ranked 19th in attendance this season. But their overall lack of direction and talent has led the Cardinals to make team history amid their record-setting attendance drop.

It's a disappointing outcome for a franchise as storied as the Cardinals, and it's an even more disappointing end to Mozeliak's tenure with the Cardinals. He helped construct some legendary teams, including the 2011 World Series champions. But, in his final year, the product on the field wasn't inspiring, bringing in the least amount of fans seen in 30 years.
