The St. Louis Cardinals are one of baseball's most interesting teams this season. Despite the offseason selling drama, the Cardinals are firmly in the NL Wild Card and Central races. A big reason why is that the team was not able to sell Nolan Arenado.
However, Arenado, in the middle of a strong 2025 season, suffered a finger injury in the Cleveland Guardians series. After the game, Arenado spoke about the issue and revealed his updated status in an article from John Denton of MLB.com.
"(The index finger) is a little swollen, and it's kind of random," Arenado said postgame. "It's okay now after we did some treatment. But it did get stiff as the game went on."
Denton also revealed that Arenado didn't view it as a serious injury, which is great news for Arenado amid his solid season. In 2025, Arenado has been solid again, but is still not reaching the heights of his 2022 campaign.
Across his 79 games played, Arenado has a .249 batting average and a .399 slugging percentage. His .708 OPS is the lowest of his career since his rookie season in 2013. He's struggled at the plate, but he's still a nice piece of the Cardinals this season.
Arenado has 1.2 WAR and is still an above-average fielder. Even if he isn't at his peak anymore, this update from Arenado is a great one, as the team doesn't have to consider making changes to the roster amid his injury.
With the Cardinals 2.5 games back of the Chicago Cubs for the NL Central lead, and sitting one game ahead of the San Diego Padres for the third Wild Card spot, the team's health is imperative. This is a relief for the Cardinals, as it looks like Arenado isn't likely to miss time following his finger injury.
