Cardinals miss out on moving Nolan Arenado again at trade deadline

St. Louis Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak used every minute leading up to the MLB trade deadline. He even completed a deal with the Texas Rangers just 68 seconds before the window closed, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported on Sunday.

The Cardinals made sure to double down on the "sellers" label they were given leading up to the final days of the MLB trade deadline. Once again, they were unable to get struggling third baseman Nolan Arenado included in any deals.

St. Louis showed interest in trading away the eight-time All-Star to acquire more young prospects and build for the future. Arenado's no-trade clause, which is included in his contract, has been used by him multiple times within the past year.

"That's twice Arenado has been thwarted by former Astros. First, it was Alex Bregman signing a free-agent contract with the Boston Red Sox in February with Arenado being their backup plan, and now Correa, with Arenado the backup plan again," Nightengale said.

Arenado, 34, was placed on the Cardinals' 10-day injured list at the beginning of the weekend. He's been dealing with a lingering shoulder issue for multiple weeks now, and the Cardinals finally decided to give him time to recover from the injury. His injury placement will allow younger prospects on the Cardinals to get field time.

Through 96 games this season. Arenado's statistics are lower than usual. In 2025, he has career lows in batting average (.235), on-base percentage (.294), slugging percentage (.366), OPS (.660), and WAR (1.1).

St. Louis is slowly falling out of the playoff race. With a 56-56 record, they are in fourth place in the NL Central division and 5.5 games behind the San Diego Padres for the last Wild Card spot.
