The St. Louis Cardinals vastly outperformed their expectations in the first half of 2025, going 51-46 through their first 97 games. As such, they remain within striking distance in the National League Wild Card race.
However, they haven't exactly picked a lane just yet. They are in contention, but have several players that teams will potentially be targeting in the coming weeks.
They have three relievers on expiring contracts that could be trade candidates. This includes left-hander Steven Matz.
Dayn Perry of CBS Sports predicts the Cardinals will be sellers at the deadline and at the very least listen to offers for Matz.
"The Cardinals are surprise contenders in the NL, at least in the wild-card race, but they'll still likely look to offload some veteran contributors before the deadline as part of the ongoing transition to a younger and (and less costly) roster," Perry predicted.
"Look for them to seek out takers on the likes of Ryan Helsley, Erick Fedde, Steven Matz, and possibly Phil Maton."

Matz has put together a solid season out of the Cardinals bullpen. He has struggled with injuries in recent years, but has remained healthy as a reliever.
The veteran left-hander is 5-2 with a 3.35 ERA in 28 appearances, two of which were starts. He also has a save this year.
While he likely won't bring back the same haul that Helsley would, Matz can still bring back a solid prospect or two. That is ultimately what St. Louis needs to prepare for the future.
The farm system is currently depleted, with several pitchers dealing with various injuries. Matz is a free agent at the end of the season and in all likelihood won't return to St. Louis in 2026.
It would make sense to shop him while his value is high and capitalize on his value while they still can.
