Cardinals catcher Ivan Herrera has a problem summed up by an unfathomable streak

1 hour ago 3

The last base runner that Ivan Herrera caught stealing was Juan Soto.

That seems fine, until the next detail: Soto was playing for the New York Yankees when that happened.

Soto joined the New York Mets before the 2025 season. So it's been a while.

Herrera is one of the St. Louis Cardinals' catchers, and he's more known for his bat.

On Friday, a stat has been going viral, and it's true and pretty crazy: The last 50 runners to try and steal on Herrera have been safe.

This is one of those stats that you read and immediately think it’s rage bait

Throwing runners out isn't everything for a catcher, but this is pretty much an unfathomable streak.

Even the worst catchers will throw out 15 or 20% of base stealers.

Herrera has been a big whopping 0% in that stat since Sept. 1, 2024.

On some level, it's not all his fault. He's a bat-first player. The Cardinals don't have to put him behind the plate.

There's also a large role played by pitchers in the success of stolen bases, one that goes less noticed but often tells more of the story on an individual steal basis.

But still -- Herrera has to throw someone out once in a while.

Until he does, teams will just keep running, and no one can blame them.
