Cardinals call up top pitching prospect Quinn Mathews for highly anticipated MLB debut

The St. Louis Cardinals are ready to give one of their most promising young pitchers his first opportunity in the majors.Left-hander Quinn Mathews, the No. 7 prospect in the Cardinals organization, is being called up from Triple-A Memphis and is expected to make his MLB debut Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays, MLB Pipeline reported Thursday.

First pitch from Rogers Centre is scheduled for 3:07 p.m. ET. The promotion represents a significant moment for Mathews, who has been one of the fastest-rising pitchers in the St. Louis farm system since being selected in the fourth round of the 2023 MLB Draft.

It also gives Cardinals fans an opportunity to see a young pitcher whose strikeout numbers have consistently separated him from the rest of the organization.

Quinn Mathews earned his Cardinals opportunity

Mathews will arrive in the majors after producing a 3.13 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 111 strikeouts over 92 innings with Memphis this season. He allowed only 53 hits across his first 19 Triple-A appearances, limiting opponents to a .192 batting average. The 25-year-old made one final emphatic statement before receiving the call.

Mathews struck out a season-high 10 batters over seven innings against the Durham Bulls on July 24. He allowed only one unearned run while helping Memphis secure a 7-2 victory.

That performance continued an impressive stretch for Mathews, who recorded a 1.31 ERA and 33 strikeouts over his final four Triple-A starts before the reported promotion. He completed at least six innings in each of those appearances.

For a Cardinals team searching for more consistency from its starting rotation, Mathews offers an intriguing combination of swing-and-miss ability, deception and durability. The left-hander has worked with a fastball, changeup, slider and curveball during his professional career. His changeup has been regarded as one of the best pitches in the Cardinals’ system, particularly when paired with a fastball that has gained velocity since his college career ended.

Mathews quickly became one of baseball’s top pitching prospects

Mathews originally gained national attention at Stanford, where he was named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year in 2023.

His most memorable college performance came during the 2023 NCAA Super Regional against Texas. Mathews threw 156 pitches in a complete-game victory, striking out 16 batters while leading Stanford to an 8-3 win. St. Louis selected him with the No. 122 overall pick shortly afterward.

Mathews then tore through four levels of the Cardinals’ minor league system during his first professional season in 2024. He finished that year with a 2.76 ERA and a minor league-leading 202 strikeouts over 143 1/3 innings. He became the first minor league pitcher to surpass 200 strikeouts in a season since 2011.

The left-hander experienced his first significant setback in 2025 when shoulder soreness delayed the beginning of his season. He eventually returned to make 22 starts for Memphis, posting a 3.93 ERA with 107 strikeouts over 94 innings. Rather than allowing the injury to derail his rise, Mathews returned stronger in 2026 and pitched his way into the Cardinals’ immediate plans.

Cardinals get a glimpse of their pitching future

Mathews’ debut will give St. Louis another important data point as it evaluates the future of its rotation.

 The Cardinals entered Thursday at 54-54 and in fourth place in the NL Central, making the final two months of the season especially important for determining which young players could hold significant roles in 2027.

Mathews has done nearly everything the organization could have asked of him in the minor leagues. Now comes his biggest test. Saturday’s start in Toronto will offer Cardinals fans their first look at whether one of the organization’s most productive pitching prospects can carry his impressive strikeout ability to the major league level.
