The St. Louis Cardinals are falling out of postseason contention.
Chaim Bloom, the Cardinals' president of baseball operations, likely expected this year to be a rebuilding one at the bottom of the NL Central standings.
Instead, the Cardinals are just two games below .500 (68-70) with 24 games left on their regular season schedule.
If the Cardinals don't qualify for the Wild Card Series, the final month of the season should be treated as an audition for next year, writes FanSided's John Perrotto.
One player to keep an eye on has struggled to make consistent contact and limit his strikeouts. The second baseman/third baseman was optioned to Triple-A Memphis in June.
"[Nolan] Gorman has been good at times during his five seasons in the big leagues but really bad at other times," Perrotto wrote.
Gorman hit a career-high 27 home runs as a 23-year-old in 2023. He's always had a propensity to swing and miss, striking out in 32.% of his plate appearances this season.
Right now, Gorman is the Cardinals' primary third baseman. He has eight home runs with a .187 batting average and a .590 OPS.

"Gorman, like [Matthew] Liberatore, is 26, and it is still too soon to write him off. Gorman needs to finish strong to be back with the Cardinals in 2027," Perrotto added.
Gorman needs a strong finish to the season for the Cardinals, and the organization is hoping he can turn things around at the plate.
The 26-year-old does not reach free agency until 2029.
