2025 marks the 50th anniversary of Richard Comely creating and publishing Captain Canuck. Since, Captain Canuck has evolved into one of the most iconic heroic figures in Canada. The Captain received a Canadian postage stamp issued in 1995, and The Royal Canadian Mint released a Captain Canuck $20 silver coin in 2018. More than 4,000,000 Captain Canuck comics books have been issued, although the publication of the series has varied in frequency over the years. The recent annexation threats and tariffs imposed by the U.S. President have brought a spotlight back to Captain Canuck as a symbol of Canadian resilience and independence.
To celebrate the milestone, Richard Comely and Lev Gleason Publishing CEO Fadi Hakim will be guests at comic conventions in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Edmonton, and Winnipeg – where Comely first published Captain Canuck in 1975. Recently, Comely was inducted into the Doug Wright Awards Hall of Fame as part of the Toronto Comic Art Festival and will appear at the 2025 San Diego Comic-Con on July 24.
In collaboration with the United Way in Ontario, Fadi Hakim will be offering United Way-branded Captain Canuck T-shirts at comic cons across Canada. Comely will cap off the anniversary with The Captain And I, a book covering the history of Captain Canuck slated for release in 2026.
Fans can look forward to more Captain Canuck with a 2025 Captain Canuck Summer Special from Lev Gleason Publications with Captain Canuck taking on Uncle Sam, set to be released at the Montreal Comic Con on July 4; you can pre-order here.
