Canucks predicted to target 6-foot-6 former 1st-round pick in free agency

The Vancouver Canucks can spend the playoffs watching from home to figure out who they might want to add to their roster this offseason.

One member of the Minnesota Wild has been linked to the Canucks already.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman spoke on his new 32 Thoughts podcast about Michael McCarron, saying the Canucks might go after him this offseason.

McCarron is set to be a free agent after the season. Right now, he's playing well, having scored two goals for the Wild in their six-game first round win over the Dallas Stars.

McCarron is a 6-foot-6 winger who is 31 years old.

He entered the NHL as a first-round pick by the Montreal Canadiens in 2013 and has since played 381 games.

He's a grinder, not a big scorer. He began the 2025-26 season with the Nashville Predators and had 12 points (5 goals, 7 assists) in 59 games.

With the Wild after the trade deadline, he had five points (3 goals, 2 assists) in 20 games.

For the season, McCarron finished with a career-high 205 hits and a career-high 77 blocks in 79 games.

He's viewed as on a bit of a career upswing, having averaged a career-high 14 minutes and 2 seconds of ice time per game in the 2025-26 season.

McCarron is never going to be a star, but he can help set the tone in the bottom-six, and for a team like the Canucks that needs players to positively impact a move toward winning, McCarron would be a solid player to add to the roster.
