Playing beyond his years, 22-year-old Jackson Chourio continues to evolve into one of the MLB's top young power threats. On a home run binge, the Milwaukee Brewers' left fielder connected again Wednesday night.
The third-year big leaguer collected his sixth homer in seven games off Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Gavin Williams (9-3), who suffered a 9-4 loss at American Family Field.
Chourio's two-run blast in the fourth inning came off a first-pitch, 92-mph cutter by Williams, who surrendered seven earned runs in four innings.
The hot-hitting Brewers, who entered Wednesday with the league's fourth-best team batting average (.254), amassed 80 runs scored in their previous 11 games.
Led by Chourio, the Brewers (44-26) continue to power their way to the top of the NL Central. They pace the second-place St. Louis Cardinals by five games.
Brewers' Jackson Chourio powering through HR binge
The Brewers' organization has been waiting for this version of Chourio to arrive. In June, he amassed 25 hits in 66 at-bats with eight home runs and 20 RBI. Five of those homers came during six appearances last week as Chourio and right-hander Jacob Misiorowski each claimed an NL Player of the Week Award.
It was Chourio's first weekly honor and the second for Misiorowski, who delivered a masterful "Maddux" last Friday.
Has the recent power surge helped Chourio earn national recognition as one of the NL's top offensive threats?
Not yet, at least outside Wisconsin.
As of the first MLB All-Star Game ballot update, Chourio ranked No. 15 among NL outfielders.
